We manage multiple society lotteries promoted by different charities supporting a wide range of causes. Since 2005, our players have raised more than £462 million for over 6,500 charities and good causes across Great Britain and internationally.

Role Summary

To work as part of our innovative development team and alongside product owners defining and developing the next generation of systems for the Players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. You will work as part of a team; mentoring, leading and line managing other team members while always striving to deliver software that returns maximum value to customers.

Key Activities

  • Leading a team of software engineers.
  • Mentorship of team members, shaping personal development.
  • Help define development strategy in collaboration with agile teams.
  • Set technical direction for the team ensuring a consistent approach.
  • Experience of TDD and domain driven design.
  • Ensuring coding standards and test coverage is maintained.
  • Embedding agile working practices.
  • Experience of implementing Continuous Integration or Continuous Deployment.
  • Experience of designing cloud native services.
  • Designing scalable fault tolerant services that are self-healing.
  • Practical experience of building dashboards and alerting strategies.
  • Champion innovation and best practice.
  • Manage the shared testing approach within agile teams.
  • Building successful relationships with product owners, developers, and testers, ensuring requirements are free from ambiguities.
  • Continuously deploying to production, supporting applications in production.

Essential Skills

  • You will have expert knowledge in Javascript, Java and Python. You have a strong opinion when it comes to coding standards and you aim to follow best practices.
  • You will have worked on large front-end applications using React, Redux, React Native or similar frameworks. You have developed APIs and microservices using Express or similar. High competency in RDBMs, NoSQL is a given, RDS and DynamoDB would be a bonus.  
  • You will have competency in RDBMs and NOSLQ, PostgreSQL, RDS or Aurora, and DynamoDB or similar.
  • You are an AWS enthusiast and you have a particular interest in Serverless; you have experience with Lambda, and API Gateway, SNS, and DyanmoDB.
  • You understand the value in Docker and Docker Compose; you are able to setup a development environment as well as creating production ready images alongside CI tools, such as Bamboo or similar.
  • Testing is a critical part of any application; you will be extremely confortable with unit testing using appropriate tools, and willing to collaborate with testers to ensure unit tests are effective, and feedback is fast.
  • You will have experience of building dashboards to radiate service information across the team; Building Alerting that notifies when there are service outages without generating false positives.  Services should be fault tolerant, infrastructure approach: Cattle not Pets.
  • You will be comfortable using Git, working on large products using an agile development methodology. You are comfortable to occasionally take on the role of scrum master.
  • You are able to bring guidance and support to your team. You are comfortable with setting up individual objectives and organising regular one to ones and team meetings.

Additional Information

Whilst the core hours of the role will be 37.5 hours per week, worked Monday – Friday 9am – 5:30pm, working out with these hours will be required around event times, where necessary time will be given in lieu.
