Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Public Affairs Manager to join our award winning Public Affairs team in Edinburgh.  

We are looking for a positive individual that is passionate about promoting People’s Postcode Lottery and our policy objectives with the UK and Scottish Governments at Westminster and Holyrood. Working in a fast-paced environment, the successful candidate will have a strong strategic focus backed by sound understanding and experience.  

Working closely with the Head of Public Affairs and the Public Affairs Officer, and engaging with other colleagues across the organisation, the successful applicant will help engage Parliamentarians in Westminster and Holyrood about People’s Postcode Lottery to ensure they are aware and supportive of our work, and will work with the Public Affairs team to drive forward and develop our policy agenda.  

The successful candidate will either have experience working in Parliament or Government or experience working as Public Affairs Manager in the charity sector, and will be ready and able to take initiative, provide advice on the best course of action and make decisions fast.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • Support and take forward People’s Postcode Lottery’s Public Affairs work, supporting the Head of Public Affairs to deliver the organisation’s Public Affairs objectives.
  • Develop policy expertise on charity lotteries, including on charity lottery reform and issues relating to responsible gambling.
  • Keep up to date on developments relating to public policy as it affects People’s Postcode Lottery, and the wider charity lottery and charity sectors. 
  • Keep up to date on political and parliamentary developments in order to inform People’s Postcode Lottery’s public affairs agenda.
  • Establish a meeting programme to widen knowledge amongst Parliamentarians  about our work.
  • Represent the Public Affairs department in internal cross-departmental meetings.
  • Meet with Parliamentarians and other stakeholders.
  • Work with the Head of Public Affairs to develop our policy agenda and strategy.
  • Support organisation and implementation of People’s Postcode Lottery’s presence at political party conferences.
  • Support organisation of People’s Postcode Lottery Parliamentary Receptions
  • Take part in People’s Postcode Lottery’s programme of MP-hosted local charity workshops.
  • Support engagement with Parliamentarians around local grant funding opportunities.
  • Assist with building the People’s Postcode Lottery Public Affairs Network with our charity family.
  • Assist with the development of briefing and research on People’s Postcode Lottery and charity lottery issues.
  • Draft letters and emails to Parliamentarians and civil servants.

Required Skills

  • Significant experience in Public Affairs in either a Parliamentary or charity sector role.  
  • Knowledge of and interest in politics, parliamentary procedure, and government structures.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the charity and charity lottery sectors.
  • Ability to represent the organisation in meetings with senior stakeholders including Parliamentarians, civil servants and charity representatives.
  • Ability to think strategically, identify what needs to happen, who needs to be involved and then delivering
  • Proven experience of building trust and developing internal and external networks to maximise opportunities
  • Strong networking ability.
  • Degree or appropriate qualifications
  • Strong understanding of public policy environment and extensive knowledge of the UK political and media environment.
  • A good track record of stakeholder management across the public and voluntary sectors.
  • Knowledge and understanding of policy development and legislation within UK government, good political understanding and contacts.
  • Strong writing skills.

Desirable Skills

  • An understanding of the legal and regulatory framework within which charity lotteries operates.
  • Experience of the charity sector would be advantageous.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Membership of the CIPR or equivalent.

Additional Information

This role is based in Edinburgh but will require travel within the UK on a regular basis, and occasional travel overseas. Office hours are 9am – 5:30pm, 37.5 hours per week; however some weekend work may occasionally be required. Due to the current situation surrounding Covid-19, remote working may be required upon joining the organisation.
